A Colorado Springs family’s early morning routine took an unexpected turn on June 26th thanks to their curious dog who starts a fire. The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) reported being dispatched to a possible house fire at 4:43 am. Thankfully, the homeowner managed to extinguish the blaze before firefighters arrived, but not without suffering from smoke inhalation and requiring a trip to the hospital.
Security Footage Reveals the Furry Culprit
While the initial call raised concerns, the true cause of the fire was a surprise. Upon reviewing security footage, CSFD discovered the culprit of starting the fire at a home in Colorado: the family dog. In a Facebook post detailing the incident, CSFD explained,
“Seems their pup got a little too curious and managed to turn on the stove.”
Accompanying video footage shows the dog leaning against a stove knob, inadvertently igniting a box placed on the burner.
Despite the canine cook’s fiery misadventure, the situation could have been much worse. The homeowners were alerted to the danger by their Apple HomePod issuing a timely “High Heat” warning. This quick notification allowed them to extinguish the flames before they spread beyond the kitchen.
However, the fire did leave its mark. Smoke damage has rendered the upstairs of the home unlivable, forcing the family to evacuate. A GoFundMe page has been established by a relative to help the family during this displacement.

Smoke Alarms, Escape Plans, and a Helping Paw
The CSFD used this incident of Fire being Started by a Dog in Colorado as an opportunity to remind the public of important fire safety measures. They emphasize the importance of having working smoke alarms installed throughout the home, keeping flammable materials away from stovetops, and having a designated escape plan for each room.
Thankfully, thanks to a combination of technology and quick action, the fire was contained, and no human or animal injuries were reported. The GoFundMe campaign aims to ease the financial burden on the family as they navigate temporary housing and replacing smoke-damaged belongings while they await insurance processing.
