A Malaysian family has honored the wishes of their tragically deceased children by holding a unique “ghost marriage” ceremony. Yang Jingshan, 31, and Lee Xueying, 32, were a young couple engaged for three years when a car accident abruptly ended their lives.
Jingshan, according to reports, was planning a surprise proposal for Xueying during a birthday trip to Bangkok. Sadly, their dreams were cut short when their car overturned in Perak on May 24th.
Determined to fulfill their children’s desires, both families came together to conduct a traditional “ghost marriage” ceremony. This ritual, practiced in some East Asian cultures with roots in Chinese tradition, unites the spirits of unmarried individuals in the afterlife.
The ceremony, held at a funeral hall, included a wedding ceremony for the couple. Their families even created a special wedding photo to commemorate them. Additionally, Jingshan’s family officially listed Xueying as their daughter-in-law in the obituary.
The belief behind ghost marriages is that unfulfilled wishes prevent the deceased from finding peace in the afterlife. By uniting their children’s spirits, the families hope to grant them the happiness they were denied in life.
What are Ghost Marriages?
“Ghost marriages are influenced by Chinese culture and are practiced in many East Asian countries,” explained Huang Jingchun, a Chinese folklore expert, to The Paper, a digital media outlet. “They fulfill not only the desires of the deceased but also the emotional needs of grieving families.”
Huang further commented, “Whether it’s out of longing for the deceased or a way to ease their own anxieties, ultimately, it’s the living who find comfort and a sense of closure through these ceremonies.”
