Sex
We need to stay up to date with the latest information and sex news, especially when it pertains to our bodies.
Based on the 2013 iVillage Married Sex Survey, we’re having predictable sex and sex gets worse after kids. It’s always good to be different, stray away from the norm, so let’s move away from those statistics and see what else we can learn.
Below are 10 shocking facts about sex you probably didn’t know. Take notes!
10. Turn That Frown Upside Down
A study found that men often feel more emotional pain after a break-up than women do. After sex, some men experience “Post-coital tristesse (PCT),” which produces sadness and regret. PCT is a feeling of melancholy, and the term itself is Latin that literally translates to “sadness after sex.”
This may come as a surprise, but PCT is more common in men than it is in women. The sad feelings can last for five minutes or up to two hours after sex. So why do guys get so sad? The reason is thought to be a result of the loss of semen, and the tired feeling the body gets after intercourse.
9. Licorice is Killing Your Sex Drive
Stay away from licorice… Unless you want to lower your sex drive. According to Best Health Magazine, licorice has been linked to lower levels of testosterone, the ever-popular hormone that strengthens sexual desire.
Lower levels of testosterone can affect mood and libido, which in turn can increase the risks of sexual problems.
Livestrong.com also advises that licorice can have significant effects on the sex hormones. Research has found that when people eat near 25g of licorice, it can affect their sex drive.
You see, licorice contains Glycerrhizinic Acid, which inhibits the liver’s ability to deactivate cortisol in circulation.
Laymen’s terms- the cortisol levels rise and this reduces the action of testosterone, which then reduces sex drive.
8. “Friend Zone”
There is proven research, which shows that men and women cannot just be friends. Women seem to be sound in their belief that opposite-sex friends can remain “just friends.”
However, the results suggest that men have a harder time turning off their craving for something more.
Scientificamerican.com states that we may think we are capable of being “just friends” with someone from the opposite sex, but romance is often lurking, just waiting to jump at the right moment.
Basically, men seem to be more likely to look at the opposite sex as potential sex partners. Women, however, prefer non-sexual friendships as they provide a source of protection and resources.
7. Belly Fat = Bust!
Not only does belly fat cause numerous health problems, but it can also place a burden on your sex life.
According to Men’s Health, belly fat is a “testosterone buster.” Women are less attracted to men who have a belly.
A large amount of belly fat can mean lower levels of testosterone, a lower sex drive, and lower fertility. According to MSN, obese men tend to have lower testosterone than thinner men.
The Doctor Oz Show advises that belly fat has a greater capability of converting testosterone to estrogen when compared to other types of fat.
Having extra estrogen slows down the production of testosterone, and the more belly fat you accrue, the more estrogen you gain. Now, on the contrary, fat men last waaaay longer in bed.
The average length of sexual intercourse with an overweight man is 7 minutes 18 seconds compared to 1 minute 48 seconds with a skinny man.
6. Sex May Be You’re Best Medicine
Endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers, are released during sex and can create a euphoria similar to opioid drug use.
In other words, an orgasm can block pain as it releases hormones that help raise your pain tolerance. It’s been said that sex is 10 times more effective than Valium.
According to ABC News, endorphins and oxytocin are released during sex, which help reduce anxiety and depression. Endorphins produce a general sense of well-being, as well as feeling peaceful and secure.
Basically, sex makes you feel darn good.
5. Where Were You Conceived?
The favorite furniture retailer, IKEA, isn’t only being recognized for having awesome beds. They are proudly able to report that their beds lead to some serious baby-making!
According to BBC News, IKEA is playing a huge part in the lives of Britain’s.
One in ten European babies are conceived in an IKEA bed. It’s awesome enough being the world’s largest furniture store, but to say that you can be credited for at least 10% of the European population is pretty darn fantastic.
4. Climax Reality
You might want to think again before putting on a pair of sexy high heels. According to time.com, wearing high heels can negatively affect a woman’s ability to climax.
Reason being- the heels cause a contraction in the pelvic floor, which in turn prevents the body to further contract during climax.
Another con… Sitting in chairs can reduce the chances of women becoming aroused. Sitting in chairs most of the day shortens the pelvic floor and psoas muscles, which are vital to reaching climax during sex.
Finally, stay well hydrated!!! Because the body is mostly fluid, staying hydrated enhances one’s ability to achieve a better level of gratification.
Vaginal dryness is common especially as women age and their hormone levels change. Lack of lubrication can cause pain and hinder women reaching their peak.
3. Old School
Ever wonder what people did back in the day to prevent pregnancy? According to medicinenet.com, birth control may seem like a modern controversial issue, but long ago men and women across the world used a variety of contraceptive devices.
For example, in South Asia, men would eat papaya seeds. If taken daily, papaya seeds could cause a man’s sperm count to fall to basically zero, making him sterile.
Best of all, the process was reversible: once the man stopped taking the seeds, his sperm count would return to normal.
Other examples of age-old methods are lemons and crocodile feces. Women used to soak sponges in lemon juice before inserting them vaginally.
Reason being- citric acid is said to have spermicidal components and the sponge itself would act as a barrier between the sperm and the cervix.
And maybe the most interesting and gross of all, ancient Egyptians used to use crocodile poo as a contraceptive. Fancy swapping your pill for a nice helping of feces, eh?
2. We Aren’t Alone
Humans aren’t the only species on Earth to enjoy sex, animals love doing the deed, especially oral sex.
According to bbc.com, oral sex occurs with some frequency throughout the animal world. Cheetahs, hyenas, bears, sheep and goats give and receive oral sex, naturally.
Researchers suggest that powerful feelings that result from pleasure, aren’t only restricted to humans.
The urge to seek out satisfaction is a combination of instinct and desire, which is found in both human and non-human.
A survey conducted by Zoo Biology showed that bears raised in captivity since cubs engaged in oral sex multiple times per day for at least 10 years.
This suggests that sex in animals may not be only reproductively-driven, but for fun and satisfaction as well.
