Chicken Identifying Numbers: A veterinarian on Gabriola Island has clucked her way into the record books, not for the quality of her eggs, but for the remarkable talents of one of her feathered friends. Emily Carrington, who initially purchased five hyline chickens for their egg-laying potential, uncovered a hidden genius amongst her flock.
Lacy the Chicken Sets World Record for Identifying Numbers
Carrington’s story began simply enough. With a touch of whimsy, she decided to see if her chickens could learn to identify magnetic letters and numbers. To her surprise, they quickly grasped the concept. “Their job was to peck only the number or letter I showed them,” Carrington explained to the Nanaimo News Bulletin.
“Even if I surrounded it with other options, they wouldn’t be fooled. They’d only peck what they were supposed to.”
Intrigued by her chickens’ ability to Identifying Numbers, Colors and Letters, Carrington decided to put their newfound skills to the test. She entered all five hens in the Guinness World Records competition for “most tricks by a chicken in one minute.” While all the chickens performed admirably, one particular hen, named Lacy, truly stood out. In a beak-tacular display of intelligence, Lacy smashed the competition by correctly identifying a record-breaking 6 letters, numbers, and colors within the one-minute timeframe.
Lacy’s impressive feat wasn’t just a win for Carrington and her feathered friend; it even prompted Guinness World Records to create a brand new category specifically for Lacy’s unique talent:
“Most identifications by a chicken in one minute.”
Carrington, who chronicles the training journey of her chickens on her YouTube channel “The Thinking Chicken,” expressed her delight at the recognition.
“Chickens are often underestimated,” she said. “Lacy’s record is a reminder that these creatures are far more intelligent than we give them credit for. Perhaps this will inspire us to take a closer look at all animals and reconsider their capabilities.”
Carrington’s story and Lacy the chicken’s record-breaking achievement of Identifying Numbers are a delightful reminder that intelligence can come in unexpected packages.
