It sounds like something out of a horror movie. Your nose is blocked and it’s difficult to breathe. You go to the doctor and after giving you an X-ray they find a tooth in there that make you Struggling to Breathe. It’s happened before.
Chinese man Zhang Binsheng had been struggling to breathe out of his nose for a few months, and could smell ‘decay’ in his nostrils. After going to the doctor, he found out that there was a tooth growing in his nose.
The 30-year-old had fallen from the third floor of a shopping mall as a child around twenty years before, and lost a tooth – or so he thought. Actually, the tooth was able to root and grow in his nostril, where it had stayed ever since, making it more difficult for him to breathe, and make itself firmly at home
The discovery was made after Binsheng went for an X-ray, and a shadow in his nasal cavity was spotted. Weirdly, Dr. Guo Longmei of Harbin Medical University explained that Binsheng’s nose hadn’t rejected the tooth as a foreign object because it was his own.
Intranasal Retained Tooth
In the end, the tooth was removed from his nose after a small medical procedure, and he is said to be recovering well after struggling to breathe. Binsheng’s condition, known medically as intranasal retained tooth, is extremely unlikely to occur, with under 0.1% of the population likely to be affected by having a tooth grow in your nose.
There have only been a small number of recorded instances of this happening before. It occurred in Denmark earlier in 2019, when a 59-year-old man visited his doctor after two years of nasal congestion – doctors found a mass that they thought might have been a cyst, but tests confirmed that it was indeed a tooth, like Zhang Binsheng.
After the tooth was extracted, both his congestion and runny nose had quickly cleared up, and just a month later he felt a lot better. Still, it can’t have been a fun experience, and he’ll no doubt be thankful that his face is back to normal and he’s no longer struggling to breathe.
