Working in a sandwich store isn’t the most exciting job in the world, but you still expect the Subway or Jimmy John ’s employee serving you to be polite to customers, right? For one couple in South Carolina, a misunderstanding at a Jimmy John ’s meant that they asked to speak to the manager, even though the workers hadn’t actually done anything wrong.

Robert Wilson Barnes ordered sandwiches for himself and his wife Colleen at the Jimmy John’s drive-thru, and when he received his food he saw what he thought was the word ‘b*tch’ written on the wrapper of his wife’s sandwich. As you might expect, he ran straight into the fast food outlet to confront the manager. According to Barnes, the manager ‘looked confused’ when presented with the sandwich, so he had to point at the scrawled writing, demanding that ‘he tells me why someone felt the need to write it on my wife’s sandwich’.
At this point, the bemused manager explained that the message was shorthand for ‘BLT with cheese’, the sandwich that was ordered. Realising their mistake, Robert and Colleen left with their food and were finally able to enjoy it. Later on, Barnes took to Facebook to explain the ordeal, and his post is a hit with social media users online.

So far, the post about the curious encounter has received over 100,000 ‘reactions’, 18,000 comments and 74,000 shares, turning the couple into a social media hit. People sympathised with Barnes in the comments – they’d have reacted the same way if they thought their partner was being insulted – but laughed too as they imagined the awkward situation.
Ordering a sandwich should be such a simple task, but it doesn’t always work out that way. A couple of weeks ago, a woman in London did this. A few years ago, singer and actress Jessica Simpson had pregnancy cravings for peanut butter and jelly sandwiches – we wonder how often she had to buy sandwiches!
