Marie Fowler, an inspiring 83-year-old woman, recently made history at Howard University by becoming its oldest graduate ever. Her remarkable journey culminated in the receipt of a doctoral degree in divinity, a testament to her unwavering determination and lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
Fowler’s educational odyssey began years ago at the Maple Springs Baptist Bible College and Seminary, where she first earned a bachelor’s degree followed by two master’s degrees.
Despite her initial hesitation and doubts about her ability to retain information after being out of school since 1959, Fowler decided to pursue a doctoral degree, a decision that would ultimately lead her to make history at Howard University.
“I want to say is that it is never too late,” Fowler shared. “I want everyone to realize that I am 83, which means if I can do it, why not you?”

Fowler’s decision to continue her education was deeply rooted in her family’s history and her desire to honor her parents.
“My mom and dad were born in an era when it was illegal for them to learn to read and write,” she explained. “We taught my dad how to read and write and how to sign his name so he wouldn’t have to put that X.”

The Howard University School of Divinity celebrated Fowler’s remarkable achievement, describing it as a “milestone achievement” in a Facebook post. Fowler’s graduation not only marked a personal triumph but also contributed to the university’s history, as she became the oldest graduate in both the School of Divinity and Howard University overall.
Her graduation was part of the university’s 156th Commencement, which boasted the largest graduating class in Howard University’s history, adding to the significance of Fowler’s accomplishment.
