Taiwan’s legislature was thrown into turmoil on Friday as lawmakers clashed over a series of reform bills aimed at expanding legislative power. The chaotic session, reported by Focus Taiwan, underscored the intense political divisions that plague the island nation’s government.
The conflict erupted after negotiations between the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) broke down. The KMT and TPP pushed to bypass committee reviews and fast-track their versions of the reform bills, leading to heated accusations and procedural battles.

The legislative session began with a heated exchange between party leaders, quickly escalating into physical confrontations as lawmakers fought for control of the podium. The brawls continued throughout the day, resulting in several legislators requiring medical attention.

As of late Friday night, the session remained deadlocked. Focus Taiwan reported that five legislators were hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the clashes. The injured included DPP members Chung Chia-pin, Chiu Chih-wei, Chuang Jui-hsiung, and Puma Shen, as well as Wu Tsung-hsien from the KMT.
