Ann Lewis affectionately calls her eight-year-old Pekingese, Wild Thang, “glugly.” But with his “glam meets ugly” charm, Wild Thang has stolen the hearts (and stomachs) of the judges at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, winning the coveted title of World’s Ugliest Dog!
The panel of judges, which included NBC News correspondent Gadi Schwartz, couldn’t resist Wild Thang’s unique appeal. “He looks like a Roomba!” quipped Sobel, a communications consultant, upon seeing the pup.
This was the fifth year Lewis and her furry friend had competed, and their perseverance paid off. Wild Thang, with his excessive gray-black fur and permanently dangling tongue, beat out seven other contenders for the top spot.
Fifth Time’s the Charm: Wild Thang Clinches World’s Ugliest Dog Title
Wild Thang’s unusual appearance stems from a bout of distemper he survived as a puppy. The virus prevented him from growing teeth, leading to his perpetually lolling tongue, and also affected his right leg, making long walks a challenge.
Yet, Wild Thang’s spirit remains unbowed. When he’s not basking in the glow of his newfound celebrity status, he and Lewis dedicate themselves to a noble cause: rescuing Pekingese dogs caught in the crossfire of war-torn Ukraine. Their dedication has already brought seven pups to safety, finding them loving homes in the US and Canada.
His triumph comes with a sweet reward package: a hefty $5,000, a year’s supply of Mug Root Beer (perhaps a favorite?), and an all-expenses paid trip to New York City for a Monday morning appearance on NBC’s Today show.
Congratulations to Wild Thang, the World’s Ugliest Dog who proves that sometimes, true beauty lies in the most unexpected places – and comes with a perpetually lolling tongue and a heart full of love.
