Roof Ninja: Michigan police found a woman living inside the sign on the roof of a Family Fare supermarket, which she referred to as her “old safe spot.” The 34-year-old woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, had been residing in the attic-like space within the sign for over a year.
On April 23, police located the woman, who had made the 5ft wide by 8ft high sign her home, complete with a coffee maker, computer, bedding, phone, and printer. The sign, accessible via a door from the roof, had served as her secret refuge, known only to her family.
The ‘Roof Ninja’ and Her Unexpected Abode
Upon being discovered, the woman, dressed in black clothing with ski goggles, emerged from the sign. She earned the nickname “roof ninja” from a police officer, who jokingly remarked on her covert living arrangement. When asked how she accessed the roof, she simply replied, “Ladder. We’re not a roof ninja.”
The discovery was made after contractors working on the roof followed an extension cord to her hideaway. Officers asked her to open a small door at the back of the sign, revealing her makeshift home. Officer Brennon Warren of the Midland Police Department expressed astonishment at her ability to access the roof. He noted the absence of a ladder and speculating that she may have climbed up from behind the store.
Despite the unusual circumstances, the woman was cooperative and agreed to leave voluntarily. She requested to call her employer and retrieve a truck to store her belongings, but police declined, stating that the store staff would handle the removal and return of her possessions. Officer Warren described the scene inside the sign, noting the presence of a mini desk, clothing, a Keurig coffee maker, a printer, and a computer, all powered by a cord plugged into an outlet on the roof.
The woman apologized and left the premises, with her future whereabouts unknown.
