Brain
The downside of having a brain is it can get messed up.
If you have watched Memento (the Hollywood film), you’d understand how scarily messed up the human brain can become.
When I say scary, I mean scary.
Sadly, that is the case with individuals suffering from most mental disorders. Take Alzheimer’s, for example. Short-term memory loss, language problems, disorientation, behavioral issues, etc. Well, that’s the old stuff.
Coming to the new (and mind-blowing) stuff …
Introducing Mary T Newport (And Her Miracle Discovery)
Mary T Newport is a pediatrician who had dealt with her husband’s illness way back in the 1950s. And, by the way, her husband, Steve, had Alzheimer’s. We have seen how bad this thing can be. Steve suffered from dementia for five years before he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. And what followed after that was all but smooth.
He was confused most of the time. Couldn’t focus. Simple things like handling cutlery or using spoons became daunting tasks. In fact, even taking food out of the refrigerator seemed far-fetched. His parietal and frontal lobes were damaged. And so were his hippocampus and amygdala. In simple terms, his brain was messed up. He couldn’t create short-term memories.
He had medications prescribed by the doctors. No result. He became skinny. Depression overtook. His motion got restricted. All hell appeared to break loose, and all hope seemed to disappear.
That’s when the moment arrived…
The Turning Point
They say turning points arrive when you least expect them. Something similar happened in the case of Steve.
Somewhere around that time, Dr. Newport started observing Steve’s diet. She searched for other options to change his diet plans. That was when she discovered the drug Ketasyn AC 1202, which stopped Alzheimer’s progression in just 3 months. It was almost a miracle. But not as much a miracle as what happened next …
The Turning Point – Part 2
She examined the drug, and the discovery blew her mind. The main component in Ketasyn AC 1202 was triglyceride. The very component coconut oil is made of.
Yes, the humble and common and so-well-known bottle of coconut oil that sits on your kitchen shelf – it has the power to reverse diseases like Alzheimer’s.
Initially, Dr. Newport was way too skeptical. Of course, how could the remedy for such a dreaded disease be something so simple? But, she had nothing to lose. So, she went to a nearby store and purchased a bottle of coconut oil.
Dr. Newport fed her husband with 2 spoons of coconut oil twice a day. Two months passed. There were the first signs of improvement. She administered the coconut oil every day, and 12 months later, Steve began to recognize faces. He even spoke to the members of his family.
Steve was becoming normal. He walked freely on the streets. He picked up his seemingly lost habit of reading. He was becoming better with each passing day.
What Research Says
Ketones are substances that act as alternative fuel for your brain. Ketones are produced when the body is digesting coconut oil, and they have been found to have a beneficial effect towards Alzheimer’s. These ketone bodies might help the brain recover from a loss of oxygen, which might eventually lead to the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
In fact, Dr. Newport had conducted a study herself on 65 patients who had mild to moderate Alzheimer’s. They were divided into two groups – one group was given coconut oil while the other received a placebo. The results appeared to be promising.
It so happened that before the administration of coconut oil, Dr. Newport’s husband couldn’t even tie his shoes. But, post the dosage, his gait improved. He could walk properly and even was able to run.
More Research
Another set of compounds that render coconut oil its Alzheimer’s-treating (and super cool) properties are the medium-chain triglycerides (MCT). In fact, when the medium-chain triglycerides go into the liver, they are converted into ketones.
Your brain runs on glucose. Your body treats the medium-chain triglycerides as carbohydrates, and the ketones hence generated do the job of glucose and act as fuel for your brain. These ketones were found to restore and renew nerve function in your brain.
But, that isn’t the best part! The best part is that the ketones improve nerve function even after damage has set in.
Now, can you believe that? This means that the diseases like Alzheimer’s that were previously thought to be irreversible may not be so after all.
And now comes another important question …
How Much Of Coconut Oil?
As per Dr. Newport’s calculations, about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil (equivalent to 35 ml) contain about 20 grams of medium-chain triglycerides. And this amount, let me tell you, can help prevent neurodegenerative diseases or treat an already established disease.
Oh yes, more research is required. Obviously. But hey, there is no reason you shouldn’t try coconut oil, right? It is good for the health anyway. It ain’t going to do any harm.
On a final note…
A Word Of Advice
Health is the most important factor. No doubt about it. Which is why I need you to consider this carefully.
Most of us have become victims of the low-fat craze. A few seriously flawed nutritional guidelines, I must say – because of which we started viewing fat in a negative light. But, let me tell you – fats are as important as any other nutrient. Avoiding fat, healthful fat I mean, can cause heart disease and even Alzheimer’s.
Avoiding fat and overconsuming carbs are the primary causes of Alzheimer’s disease. But they are preventable. That’s good news. By making certain changes to your lifestyle – which is possible.
Fat ain’t bad. It’s the bad fat that is unhealthy. Fat, by itself, is required for human functioning. Now, this doesn’t mean you hop into the nearby McDonald’s and gorge your way to glory. That’s not what I meant. But you get the point, don’t you?
I know you do. That’s why I want you to spread the message. It might save someone from serious trouble. And do let me know how you found this article. You can comment in the box given below.
Till then, cheers!
By the way, just a thought – the guy from Memento could have used coconut oil probably. What do you think?
