Puppy
For generations, children and teenagers have begged their parents for pets and tried a range of different tactics to get their wish, but none have been quite as ingenious as this 18-year-old, who wrote her mom an essay and a CV to convince her she should be allowed a Puppy as her main Christmas gift.
Teenager Kayla Severi, who makes pizza for a living, was desperate for a Staffordshire bull terrier puppy for Christmas this year, but was disappointed after her mom told her it was ‘never going to happen’. Not giving up, she wrote a CV and cover letter to persuade her mom to let the family have the puppy.
Kayla, from Sydney, Australia, already lives with two dogs, but found out that her friend’s cousin was selling puppies. She might be an adult, but still living with her mom, it’s her who has the deciding choice. So to persuade her, she decided to concoct the mock CV in the hope that it could change her mind.
Persuasion
‘I am writing to express my interest in owning my own pet dog, a male staffy that is 9 weeks old’ the letter began, before going into why Kayla should be allowed to have her own pet (excellent time management skills, ‘hella money’, love and kindness), complete with photo, name and job title and contact details.
Not finished there, she also wrote an 800-word essay, discussing how having the puppy would be beneficial to her mental health, and improve her skills in money-handling, responsibility, and companionship – like emotional support animals. She also bought her mom a treat from the local store, ‘just to put her in an even better mood’.
At first, the answer was still a ‘no’, but her mom then gave in and allowed her to adopt the puppy, which she has named Bandit, and now lives alongside the pair’s other two dogs. She started laughing originally, before reading her daughter’s work and then agreeing that she should be allowed to have a dog.
