Ghanaian Forestry Student Abubakar Tahiru Makes History with Record-Breaking Tree Hugging Marathon in Alabama’s Tuskegee National Forest.
Abubakar Tahiru, a 29-year-old forestry student from Ghana, has etched his name in the annals of history by setting a new world record for the most trees hugged in a single hour.
Tahiru achieved this extraordinary feat in the picturesque setting of Tuskegee National Forest in Alabama, where he embraced a stunning total of 1,123 trees.
Tahiru’s journey to this record-breaking moment is as remarkable as the feat itself. Hailing from a farming community in Tepa, Ghana, Tahiru developed a profound appreciation for nature and its conservation from a young age.
His decision to pursue a master’s degree in forestry at Auburn University in Alabama was a natural progression of his deep-rooted passion.

The Challenge of Tree Hugging
The record attempt was not without its challenges. Tahiru had to wrap both arms around each tree in a close embrace, ensuring no damage was caused to the trees in the process. Moreover, no tree could be hugged more than once, requiring Tahiru to maintain a brisk pace throughout the hour-long endeavor.
Adding to the complexity of the task, Tahiru was observing Ramadan at the time of the attempt. Fasting meant he was unable to drink water during the hour, presenting a significant physical challenge.
However, Tahiru saw this as an opportunity to push himself further, as the absence of water breaks allowed him to maintain an uninterrupted rhythm.
Despite these challenges, Tahiru’s determination and passion for nature drove him forward. With an average of 19 trees hugged per minute, he easily surpassed the minimum requirement of 700 trees set by Guinness World Records.
His record-breaking effort not only demonstrates his remarkable physical endurance but also serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of trees and environmental conservation.
Tahiru’s achievement has garnered widespread acclaim, with many praising his dedication and commitment to raising awareness about the environment.
