A group of passionate engineers from the Netherlands has achieved a childhood dream: building the world’s longest rideable bicycle! This incredible feat of engineering measures a staggering 180 feet (55.16 meters), roughly the length of four double-decker buses.
The project wasn’t without its challenges. Though construction began in 2018, the team faced a two-year delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In total, it took them four years to complete the massive metal structure, which requires a minimum of two riders to operate.
While achieving their goal was a dream come true, a technicality initially threw a wrench in their plans. Their first attempt at a record-breaking ride in June 2023 yielded a surprise – Guinness initially classified the creation as the world’s longest tandem, not the world’s longest bicycle.
A Childhood Dream to Build World’s Longest Rideable Bicycle
The mastermind behind this project is 39-year-old Ivan Schalk, who dreamt of building this behemoth since reading about such creations in the Guinness Book of Records as a child. Fueled by his childhood fascination, Schalk finally embarked on his mission in 2018, enlisting the help of like-minded tech-savvy residents from his village of Prinsenbeek.
The distinction mattered to Schalk and his team. According to Guinness rules, a maximum of two riders are allowed on a record-breaking bicycle, with one person at the front handlebars and another at the back pedaling. While adhering to this rule, the team had also included space for three additional people to sit on the long metal frame connecting the front and back sections. These extra passengers were purely for weight and didn’t contribute to pedaling, but Guinness deemed them a violation of the single-purpose cycling rule.
Undeterred, the team embraced the tandem record and set their sights on another Guinness title: the world’s longest rideable bicycle. This time, they followed the two-rider rule strictly and recently received official confirmation from Guinness, solidifying their place in the record books with two impressive titles.
Interestingly, the long central section of the bicycle wasn’t a permanent fixture. The team cleverly rented this section from a local metal production company specializing in building event stages. After achieving their record, they returned this rented portion, keeping the front and back sections for display at the Prinsenbeek local history museum.
