Kyle, Texas, made another spirited attempt to break the world record for the largest gathering of people with the same name. On Saturday, 706 Kyles of all ages gathered at a park in the suburbs of Austin, but despite the impressive turnout, the effort fell short of the record.

The current record, held by a town in Bosnia, saw 2,325 people named Ivan come together in 2017, according to Guinness World Records. This high number remains unbeaten, and the city of Kyle’s latest attempt couldn’t surpass it.

A Bold Attempt at History: Gathering the Kyles

This was not the first time the Kyles aimed to dethrone the Ivans. Last year, the city’s Gathering of the Kyles saw an official count of 1,490 participants. The event has become a notable tradition in Kyle, Texas, a rapidly growing city located about 37 miles south of Austin. The annual gathering attracts Kyles from all over the country, creating a unique and festive atmosphere.

Participants at the event enjoyed various activities and entertainment. The city park was bustling with food stalls, music performances, and games for children and adults alike. The highlight of the day was, of course, the official count of Kyles, which took place in the early afternoon. The organizers used a meticulous registration process to ensure every Kyle was counted accurately.

Mayor Travis Mitchell expressed pride in the community’s efforts despite not breaking the record. “The spirit and camaraderie shown by everyone here today is what truly matters. While we didn’t set a new record, we did strengthen our sense of community and had a lot of fun in the process,” Mitchell said.

Kyle Smith, one of the participants who traveled from out of state, shared his thoughts on the event.

“It’s incredible to see so many people with the same name come together. Even though we didn’t break the record, it’s a memorable experience, and I’ll definitely be back next year,” he said.

Despite their enthusiasm, the name Kyle is not among the most popular in the U.S. According to the Social Security Administration, which tracks the popularity of names annually, Kyle ranked 416th among male names in 2023. In contrast, the name Ivan ranked 153rd. This disparity in name popularity might be one of the factors making it challenging for the Kyles to surpass the Ivans’ record.

What’s Next? Future Plans and Aspirations

Looking ahead, the city  remains hopeful and determined. Plans are already underway for next year’s Gathering of the Kyles, with organizers brainstorming new strategies to attract even more participants. They are considering expanding their outreach efforts, involving more local businesses, and enhancing the event’s attractions to draw a larger crowd.

While they did not break the record this year, their efforts highlighted the unity and creativity of the Kyle community. The annual gathering has become a beloved tradition, and with each passing year, the city edges closer to achieving its goal.
