A chimpanzee at Shendiao Mountain Wildlife Park in Weihai City, Shandong Province, showcased remarkable intelligence by returning a lost shoe to a visitor.
The incident began when a guest accidentally dropped their sandal into the primate enclosure. The 14-year-old chimpanzee, named Dong Dong, quickly noticed the shoe and began to play with it. The owner of the sandal, distressed by the loss, sought help from a zoo staff member.
The Playful Chimpanzee and the Misplaced Sandal
A video captured the entire event. Initially, Dong Dong could be seen holding the white sandal, which resembled a Croc, in his mouth while visitors watched and laughed at the playful scene. However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the zoo keeper commanded Dong Dong to return the shoe “quickly.”
To everyone’s astonishment, Dong Dong the Chimpanzee obediently tossed the sandal back to its owner, prompting cheers and applause from the onlookers.
The zoo keeper explained that Dong Dong is exceptionally intelligent and has previously returned lost items to visitors. This incident is a testament to the close bond and understanding that can exist between humans and primates.
This is not the first time a chimpanzee has demonstrated such behavior. Last year, in a less friendly incident, a visitor at another Chinese zoo threw a water bottle at a chimpanzee, who then threw it back into the crowd, hitting a young girl.
