Finnish Bakery
We all enjoy eating cakes, but some are weirder than others – we usually think of celebrities like Christina Aguilera as pulling out all the stops with extravagant cakes, but sometimes small business can create bizarre snacks too. A Finnish bakery has been able to protect themselves from serious financial struggles during the coronavirus pandemic by creating a cake in the design of a roll of toilet paper.
Ronttosrouva bakery in the Finnish capital of Helsinki found themselves in a spot of bother last month as their orders were cancelled. However, at the same time, the panic-buying of toilet roll really started to take off, which gave the bakery staff an idea. The Finnish bakery decided to create a toilet roll cake, which was made from oat batter, passion fruit mousse, and a white fondant to give the cake the appearance of toilet paper.
They’ve certainly been popular so far, with the first five cakes made being sold in less than an hour. After going viral on social media, the bakery has become inundated with orders – they’re preparing to make hundreds of cakes in order to cope with the demand, and far from struggling financially, Ronttosrouva have actually added two more people to the team.
Owner Saana Lampinen described the decision to make the cake as a “game changer”, saying that she is relieved “because I know all my employees are safe for months now.”
Toilet Paper Cakes
Funnily enough, Ronttosrouva employees aren’t the only people to be making toilet paper cakes during COVID-19. Australian woman Kate Pritchett made one at home as she had toilet roll “on the mind a lot lately”, and after her husband Michael took to Twitter, she also went viral online with almost 120,000 likes.
Bakers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Dortmund, Germany have also been making toilet paper cakes, so it seems like it’s a trend that has truly gone worldwide.
If you thought toilet paper cakes were crazy enough, you won’t want to miss this wedding dress that’s almost good enough to eat. For more weird stories about how people are coping during the coronavirus pandemic, check out some of our other recent posts!
