A fiery lunch break at Rokugo Koka High School turned into a trip to the hospital for fourteen students on Tuesday. The culprit? A bag of Super Spicy potato chips labelled “18+ Curry Chips.”
School Snack Goes Nuclear
According to Japan Today, a student brought the Super Spicy Chips to school, likely intending to share the daring snack with classmates. What began as a potentially fun experience quickly turned sour for many. Around 30 students reportedly partook in the chips, but 14 suffered enough discomfort to require medical attention. Thankfully, all the affected students are believed to have only minor symptoms like nausea, stomach pain, and mouth pain.
The Infamous “18+ Curry Chips”
The chips in question, manufactured by Isoyama Corporation, are no ordinary potato snack. The company takes heat warnings seriously, explicitly advising against consumption by anyone under 18 due to their extreme spiciness. Even seasoned spice enthusiasts are cautioned to proceed with care. These chips reportedly contain ghost peppers, one of the hottest peppers on the planet. For reference, ghost peppers are a staggering 170 times hotter than Tabasco sauce!
Super Spicy Chips and Social Media Challenges
Last year, a tragic case in the United States saw a teenager lose their life after consuming a super-spicy tortilla chip as part of a similar social media dare.
While these “Super Spicy Chips 18+” chips may seem enticing to some, especially teenagers seeking a thrill, it’s crucial to respect the warnings and prioritize your health. These snacks are not meant to be consumed lightly, and the potential consequences can be far more serious than a stomachache.
School officials at Rokugo Koka High School have not yet released a statement regarding the incident. It remains unclear if any disciplinary action will be taken against the student who brought the chips.
