A llama named Jeffrey made a dramatic escape from his enclosure in Bangor, Maine, this week, apparently in an attempt to ditch a teeth cleaning appointment.
Rina Pesner, owner of Rebels Homestead Farm, opened the gate to her animals’ area to allow a veterinarian access to Jeffrey. However, the sight of the dental professional proved too much for the independent-minded llama.
Jeffrey the Llama Makes a Break for It
“Jeffrey saw this as a jailbreak opportunity and just ran past me into Stillwater,” Pesner told WABI-TV. “
“He just wanted to get out of the field and see what was going on down the road, but in general he’s pretty good.”
News of Jeffrey the Llama escape spread quickly, with Bangor Police Department’s animal control officer, Trish Bruen, responding to reports of a loose llama. The department even took to Facebook to offer a humorous explanation for Jeffrey’s behavior.
“It is possible that Jeffrey neglected to brush and floss his teeth twice a day and was embarrassed that the entire stable would soon find out,” the department’s lighthearted post read.
Thankfully, Jeffrey’s adventure was short-lived. He returned home on his own accord just before Bruen arrived, albeit from a different direction than he left in.
“I’m not sure of his adventure path, but he came down from the other side of our house where he started,” Pesner said.
This wasn’t the first time an animal at Rebels Homestead Farm had gone rogue. Pesner revealed that two of her pigs once staged a similar escape, eventually returning home courtesy of a police car. However, thanks to fence reinforcements implemented two years ago, Jeffrey’s brief break for freedom was the farm’s first escape attempt since.
While the details of Jeffrey the Llama adventure remain a mystery, one thing is certain: this llama clearly values his dental privacy.
