New Orleans Police Department officials have disclosed a bizarre situation at their headquarters, revealing that rats infesting the building have been getting “all high” from consuming marijuana stored in the evidence room.
Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick raised the issue during a City Council’s Criminal Justice Committee meeting, highlighting the building’s infestation with cockroaches and rats. She emphasized that the rats, in particular, seem to be enjoying themselves while destroying evidence.
Marijuana-Fed Rats Rampant
“The rats eating our marijuana, they’re all high,” Kirkpatrick told the committee, shedding light on the peculiar predicament.
In response to the building’s multiple issues, not limited to pests, Kirkpatrick advocated for a $7.6 million proposal to temporarily relocate the police headquarters to a leased space in a downtown building for a period of 10 years. This move aims to explore permanent solutions for the current building’s numerous problems.
Criminal Justice Committee Chairman Oliver Thomas acknowledged the deteriorating state of the facilities, stating, “We all know the facilities have been rundown. Last year, it was so hot that we had to close the buildings. Sometimes it’s so cold that our officers and the rank at headquarters can’t even occupy the building,” in an interview with WDSU-TV.
Gilbert Montano, the city’s chief administrative officer, informed the committee that the relocation proposal would be significantly more cost-effective than the estimated $30 million needed to renovate the current headquarters.
The proposal is now set to be presented to the full City Council for approval.
Despite the unusual situation, experts note that it is scientifically improbable for the rats to be experiencing the euphoric effects of cannabis. Raw cannabis contains inactive ingredients that require heating—decarboxylation—before THC is produced in a form that can induce a “high” sensation in mammals.
