Fox Mask: Employees at the Richmond Wildlife Center in Virginia are nurturing an orphaned fox kit, taking on the role of mother foxes to ensure its well-being.
A video shared on the center’s Facebook page shows Executive Director Melissa Stanley wearing a red fox mask and rubber gloves as she carefully feeds the tiny kit from a syringe. The kit, perched atop a large stuffed animal fox intended to resemble its mother, is receiving specialized care to prepare it for eventual release back into the wild.
The Fox Mask Effect
The center explained in the post that staff wear the fox mask to minimize human sounds and create visual barriers. This crucial step prevent the kit from becoming imprinted or habituated to humans. These efforts increase the likelihood of successful reintroduction into its natural habitat.
A man brought the kit to the center on February 29 after finding it in an alley in Richmond, mistaking it for a kitten. Within 24 hours of birth, with its umbilical stump still attached, the mother attempted to provide initial care for the kit in order to reunite with it. However, efforts to locate the den site were unsuccessful, as the foxes had been trapped and removed.
Staff members have dedicated themselves to feeding the kit every two to four hours. It tries to mimick the care it would receive from its mother in the wild by wearing the fox mask.
The center sought out other red fox kits of similar age and weight within the rehabilitation community. Ultimately, the goal is to release all the kits back into the wild together. So that they recognize their own species and can contribute to the wildlife population.
