Around the world there are a variety of different laws and regulations for people to follow, and we’re sure to find some of them bizarre. For example, police in Pakistan recently arrested a donkey for alleged involvement in gambling.
Gambling is a crime in the South Asian nation, and police in the city of Rahim Yar Khan, in the Punjab, interrogated eight men on suspicion of gambling in public. Allegedly, they were placing bets on a donkey race, so the police went along to arrest them. However, for some reason they also decided to bring the it along with them.
The police managed to find 120,000 Pakistani Rupees (around $730), which was set aside for betting in the donkey race. Gambling in public is illegal in Pakistan, although the fine varies. Sometimes a fine of 500 rupees will be given, while in serious cases it can lead to a year’s imprisonment. Gambling in private is illegal too, and this is dealt with even more severely. A fine of 1,000 rupees maximum, two years in prison, or both is the usual punishment.
Donkey was Arrested
All nine individuals – humans and donkey – couldn’t be released from custody at first, as they were all arrested on the spot, and were named in the ‘first information report’. It’s unclear why the donkey was arrested but more information on the case is sure to come to light in the coming days.
The station house officer to Rahim Yar Khan Police Station B Division said that “the donkey has been arrested as it has been named in the FIR along with other suspects. He has currently been tied outside the police station.”
However, the donkey has now been released. There were reports that it had been granted bail, but according to local police, the donkey had been kept in custody for four days before simply being released. It had spent the four days tied in a cattle field near the police station.
