Waoh!, this is unbelievable, can you ever imagine a man who hiccuped all his life. Well no one would ever want that.
Today I found a record breaker called Charles Osborne (1893-1991), he actually had hiccups non-stop for approximately 68 years, from 1921 to 1991. This condition is known medically as ‘’Synchronous Diaphragmatic Flutter’’.
He still holds the Guinness book of record for the longest bout of hiccup ever recorded.
He was born in an Iowa farm in 1893 working on as a farmer on his father’s property. Until his life took a turn for the worse on 1922.
According to him in an interview ‘’I was hanging a 350 pound hog for butchering, I then picked it up then fell down. Surprisingly, I felt nothing but the doctor said later that I busted a blood vessel size of a pin in my brain ’’. Unfortunately, since then he has had a bad case of hiccups and drank a lot of water while taking spoonfuls of sugar but nothing seemed to work.
For 68 years, he had hiccups 40 times per minute on average, which is about 58 000 times a day. It was estimated that he hiccuped over 550 million times throughout his lifetime. Wtf!
For a few years, Osborne sought medical advice but all to no avail which in time became more expensive and time consuming. But according to him in an interview ‘’I learned to reduce the noise of my hiccups by incorporating breathing techniques in his everyday life’’.
Well, amazingly the hiccups did not deter Osborne abilities to woo opposite sex. He had two marriages during his lifetime and didn’t stop the 5’5 man from leading a normal life.
Years passed by and suddenly the hiccups completely stopped in 1989.
I really hope no one ever beats his record.
