A group of fortunate black bears residing in Woburn Safari Park found themselves embarking on a unique adventure as heavy rains transformed their enclosure into a temporary aquatic playground.
The 13-acre reserve, nestled within the picturesque landscape of Bedfordshire, experienced a deluge that resulted in the formation of a mini lake within the bears’ habitat. Seizing the opportunity to introduce a dash of excitement into the bears’ lives, keepers at the park decided to float a swan pedalo onto the newfound water body.
Tommy Babington, the deputy head of the carnivore section at Woburn Safari Park, described the bears’ reaction as one of immediate intrigue. He recounted how the bears wasted no time in investigating their novel neighbor, the swan pedalo, which is typically utilized elsewhere on the park grounds but had been awaiting new pedals at the time.
Enrichment Strategies at Woburn Safari Park
“For visitors, witnessing the bears climb aboard the pedalo was an entertaining spectacle,” remarked Mr. Babington. “We continually strive to devise innovative methods of providing food, scent, and habitat enrichment that stimulate the bears’ natural foraging behaviors.”
The Woburn Safari Park’s enrichment program encouraged bears to explore the pedalo, known for their innate curiosity, as a means of keeping their minds and bodies engaged. Mr. Babington emphasized that while the pedalo may seem like an unconventional approach to enrichment, it proved to be a resounding success, eliciting enthusiastic participation from the bears.
The quartet of black bears, comprising two pairs of siblings named Harvard, Maple, Colorado, and Aspen, hail originally from North America. These majestic creatures can reach lengths of up to 2 meters and weigh more than 45 stone, adding to the allure of their impromptu pedalo escapade.
The incident not only provided a lighthearted moment for visitors but also underscored the Woburn Safari Park’s commitment to ensuring the well-being and enrichment of its animal residents.
