An Australian man has captured the attention of his community by transforming a Giant Pumpkin grown in the country into a makeshift canoe and paddling it down the picturesque Tumut River.
Mark Peacock, the proud grower of the nearly 900-pound pumpkin affectionately named Tormund after the beloved Game of Thrones character Tormund Giantsbane, initially cultivated the colossal gourd for competition. Tormund clinched the blue ribbon at the prestigious Royal Easter Show, marking it as the largest pumpkin to win an award at any Australian agricultural event this year.
The Giant Pumpkin Quest
However, it was Peacock’s friend, Adam Farquharson, who envisioned a novel use for the Giant Pumpkin. Farquharson, inspired by Tormund’s sheer size and charm, approached Peacock with a unique proposition—to repurpose the pumpkin into a buoyant vessel before it met its fate as livestock feed.
With Peacock’s blessing, Farquharson set to work hollowing out the Giant pumpkin, transforming it into a boat christened “Cinderella.” The duo’s whimsical endeavor culminated in a memorable voyage down the tranquil Tumut River in New South Wales, with approximately 1,000 spectators lining the banks to witness the spectacle.
Reflecting on the unconventional send-off, Peacock shared his delight with the Australian Broadcasting Corp, stating, “It was a fitting send-off that the community got to experience Tormund the Giant pumpkin one more time in a different capacity.”
For Farquharson, the motive behind the stunt was simple—pure enjoyment and spreading smiles. “It’s just something really cool to do. I’ve paddled that river so many times, [but] that’s the most fun I’ve ever had floating down the Tumut River,” he remarked, earning himself the affectionate moniker “Popeye the Pumpkin Man” from locals.
Despite the newfound fame, Farquharson remains grounded, quipping, “I think the worldwide fame will wear off pretty soon. I won’t end up like Taylor Swift. I’ll just get back to life as normal.”
As the adventure draws to a close, the giant pumpkin will return to its original purpose, nourishing Peacock’s cattle.
