Analyzing an impressive 350,757 coin tosses performed by 48 individuals using 46 currencies, the team, led by František Bartoš, found compelling evidence for this phenomenon.
According to Bartoš, their findings, which were shared on social media, support the theory proposed by Diaconis and colleagues in 2007, showing that coins are more likely to land on the same side they started from. Specifically, the study found that coins flipped into the air and caught in the hand had a 50.8% chance of landing on the same side.

The study, titled “Fair coins tend to land on the same side they started: Evidence from 350,757 flips,” was published online, shedding light on an intriguing aspect of probability. Bartoš also noted that in a series of 1,000 coin tosses, knowing the starting position of the coin could earn you an average of 19 dollars, surpassing the advantages of certain casino games like blackjack.
Interestingly, the researchers observed slight variations in the odds among different individuals, suggesting that flipping techniques may play a role in the outcome. Some individuals exhibited a clear bias towards same-side landings, while others showed no bias at all.
