Animal Rescue: Arizona wildlife rescuers are urging the public to exercise caution and refrain from intervening with seemingly abandoned newborn animals, following a recent case of mistaken identity involving a pair of gray fox kits.
The Arizona Humane Society recounted a recent incident where a resident brought what they believed to be unattended kittens to the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in Scottsdale. However, upon closer inspection by wildlife experts, it was discovered that the animals were not kittens but rather gray fox kits.
The Misunderstood ‘Kittens’ of the Animal Rescue
The gray fox kits, mistaken for domestic kittens, will undergo rehabilitation at the center and will eventually be released back into the wild once they are old enough to survive on their own.
This case highlights the importance of leaving wildlife alone and not attempting to rescue them unless they are in immediate danger. The Arizona Humane Society emphasized that interfering with wildlife can often do more harm than good, as young animals are best cared for by their mothers in their natural environment.
In a social media post, the AHS urged, “DON’T KITNAP KITTENS! We know the first instinct when seeing a litter of kittens is to rush to aid. But in fact, the best thing we can do is leave them for when their mama returns.
“They also noted that mother animals may leave their young unattended for extended periods, up to eight hours at a time, as part of their natural behavior.”
Wildlife experts advise the public to keep a safe distance from wildlife and to contact local wildlife rescue organizations if they encounter animals in distress or if they are interested in Animal Rescue.
