Being Abandoned
Some adoption stories are more bizarre than others, but this report about three children being abandoned at the same apartment complex over the course of four years could be one of the strangest yet.
In 2016, an infant was left on a doorstep in an apartment complex in Orlando. That might not sound too strange on its own as we sometimes hear of stories like this. However, a year later, another infant was left on the same doorstep. Then, in 2019, another was left with a note from the baby’s mother.
Local police investigated the situation, and discovered through DNA tests that the three children are actually all siblings, with the pregnancies a product of both the same mother and father.
Florida has a ‘Safe Haven’ law, so newborn babies can be left at hospitals, fire stations and medical stations in the first week of their lives – generally, parents won’t be under investigation. However, the mother in this case didn’t leave the children at a ‘safe haven’, so she may not be covered by the law.
DNA Testing
It’s still unknown as to why the infants were all left at the same apartment complex, and why the mother thought it was best to leave them there. Detective Ghena Luker said in note in which she request the funding for the DNA testing that she “submitted DNA from all three children and learned they shared the same mother and father … several additional familial matches were also discovered through the DNA testing.”
However, with the investigation still ongoing, there has been no further comment. Being such an odd situation, people will be wanting answers, and more will be known in due course.
Surprise siblings might sound unexpected, but it’s not the first time a similar case has been witnessed. In 2016, it came to light that another set of three children, again abandoned by the same mother, born in the 1980s, were reunited around 30 years later. Despite this, the three siblings haven’t judged their biological mother, and were able to move on with their lives.
