You’ll have seen stories about how, with humans staying at home, nature has blossomed. This is been more noticeable in some places than others, however, such as the seaside town of Llandudno in Wales, which is currently being overrun with over 100 Kashmiri Goats.
The goats usually live in the Great Orme country park, a notable limestone landmark just north-west of the town. But with Llandudno being so quiet due to the lockdown in the UK currently, they’ve decided to take over the town, as if it’s a real-life Animal Crossing.
They haven’t caused too much trouble this time. Apparently, they’ve been eating a few hedges and invited themselves into various front yards of local residents, which isn’t too serious when compared to past antics.
The goats are fairly well-known in the town. Last month, they ran riot around the grounds of a local elementary school, eating recently-planted trees. The school’s principal referred to them as “vandals”, uploading photos to social media of the goats going up the disabled ramp to the school. In the past, the goats have also eaten the apple blossom on their apple trees, as well as damaging and destroying some of the branches.
Animals going on the run
A spokesperson for North Wales Police said that as they expect the goats to leave of their own accord before too long, they won’t be responding to any non-emergency contact regarding them. Although they might be slightly annoying to residents, they’re largely harmless and so it makes sense for them to be left alone while the town self-isolates.
There have been over 100 Kashmiri goats in the Great Orme county park for over 100 years. Originally, they were a gift to Lord Mostyn from Queen Victoria back in the 1800s, but are now legally considered wild animals, with the local Conwy County Council loosely in control of them.
