DNA Tests
It’s become more common in recent years to gift friends and family DNA tests on special occasions, or for genetic or scientific reasons, but sometimes it can go wrong. When a woman bought her boyfriend a DNA testing kit for Christmas, his mom’s reaction showed her that it was actually a pretty bad idea.
The woman took to popular site Reddit to explain the predicament. Her boyfriend was interesting in trying out a DNA test, so she bought him one as a Christmas present. Once it arrived and was wrapped ready for Christmas Day, she mentioned the gift to her partner’s mother, after which all hell broke loose, as she had been hoping for no DNA tests.
She said to her son’s girlfriend that she should hold off on giving the present, ‘maybe until his birthday’. She then confessed that, actually, her ex-husband wasn’t the father of her children. As he had been infertile, the couple had to use a sperm donor for their two sons.
As the son is question is in his mid-twenties, his girlfriend felt that she had to offer his mom an ultimatum where she had to tell her son the truth by a certain date. People on Reddt were split, some saying that her boyfriend should know the truth as soon as possible, and others opining that it wasn’t any of her business.
Home Testing
As it stands, nobody knows whether he has been told yet, or whether it’s still a secret. However, people will undoubtedly be waiting for an update from the girlfriend. Meanwhile, there have been other examples of awkwardness and family secrets being revealed through DNA home testing kits.
Earlier this year, a couple in their 20s decided to do DNA tests for fun, but it ended up with the woman breaking up with her boyfriend. It turned out that he was related to a notorious serial killer. He asked his family if they were aware, and it turned out that they were. After that, his girlfriend couldn’t get over the discovery, and ended the relationship.
