Ratatouille
Ham sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, bacon sandwiches – meat in bread is a common snack the world over. We even get our favourite low-fat, healthy options. But most of us don’t want to be eating rats in our sandwiches. At a service station in Ireland, a video was filmed of a giant rat crawling out of a bag of bread. It’s like something out of the 2007 Disney Pixar film Ratatouille, where the rat Remy harbors dreams of becoming a chef. But far less hygienic in the real world, as people won’t be happy with rats in the kitchen in a hurry.
Irish customer Tony Groves posted the footage on Twitter, and said that he had been sent the clip on messaging service WhatsApp. In the video, the rat jumps out of the bag of bread, and starts to move around the kitchen, where it is likely that staff would be preparing food. It’s unknown what happened to the rat after this, but customers will no doubt be hoping that their meals remained untouched.
Local environmental health officials are due to visit the service station for an inspection, as clearly hygiene standards are not being met. According to the Metro website, a member of staff at the service station refused to comment.
There’s
a mouse in my bread
It’s not an isolated occurrence. There have been many instances of animals contaminating food preparation spaces, and in a lot of cases, the party at fault has to cough up. It can be a serious matter, as around 600 million people end up ill after eating contaminated food each year. In real life, there’s no Ratatouille.
Premier Foods in the UK was fined the equivalent of over $7000 after a man discovered a dead animal in his loaf of bread in 2009. Environmental officers were able to identify the creature as a mouse – minus the tail. And not too long ago a Florida woman found live worms in her McDonald’s sandwich.
